Here are tons of fun MENU NIGHT activities to choose from. Try a different one each week! I invite you to create your own fun ways to study your spelling words! I'll even add your activity to the website and I'll name it after you!

Here are the only rules for Spelling MENU NIGHT (usually on Wednesday night):

1. Make sure you write the name of your selected MENU NIGHT activity in your spelling packet. Be sure to have mom or dad sign the sheet so I know you completed a task for homework. You do not have to bring finished products to school unless you want to share them with the class.

2. Do not do the same menu activity more than once per month.

Interactive and Online Activities

You can enter your own spelling word list to play in the game. Lots of fun! You can only enter 7 words per round.

On Your Own

Type ‘Em - Type all of your spelling words on the computer or on a typewriter. You can even email them to me! (Click here and then type out your words in the message section!)

Sign Your Words - Use sign language to sign your words! Here's a chart to help you.

Fancy Letters - Use old magazines, catalogs, or newspapers to cut out letters and glue them down to spell your words!

Chalk It Up - (Warm day required!) Use sidewalk chalk to write your words on the sidewalk!

What’s A Word Worth? - Each letter is worth a different amount of money. Write what each letter is worth and add it up to see which spelling word is worth the most.
This would be an example:
A=1 cent, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9, J=10, K=11, L=12, M=13, N=14, O=15, P=16, Q=17, R=18, S=19, T=20, U=21, V=22, W=23, X=24, Y=25, Z= 26 cents.

CAT: would equal 3 (C) + 1 (A) + 20 (T) = 24 Cents.

You can change the values of the letters if you would like to challenge yourself!

Phone Spelling - Use the number/letter pad on a phone. Write each spelling word and its phone number.

The phone number for the word "school" is 724665!

Trace Around - Print one of your spelling words neatly. Take a colored pen and draw an outline around the word, closely following the shapes of the letters. Close your eyes and remember the shape. Now try to write the word.

Riddle Me - Write a riddle for each word.

Story, Story - Write a story using ALL of your spelling words.

Sentence Please - Write a sentence for each spelling word.

Colorful Words - Use two different color pens to write your spelling words. Use one color to write the consonants and the other for the vowels. Do this one more time. Close your eyes and picture the word in your mind. Now try and write the word with just one color.

Memory Game - Make pairs of word cards. Flip them over and try to match the pairs!

Scrabble - Use Scrabble tiles to spell your words.

With A Grown Up

Spelling Baseball - Draw four bases on a piece of paper or set up four chairs to be the bases. The Pitcher (a grown up) selects a word. If the Batter (you) can spell the word correctly, you move forward one base. If you cannot spell word, you remain where you are on base. You receive a point every time you home base.

Finger Tracing - Use your finger to spell out each of your words one letter at a time on your Mom or Dad’s back. Then it’s YOUR turn to feel and spell.

Sing Them Loud, Sing Them Soft - Have your Mom or Dad sing the letters of a spelling word to you in a loud voice. You echo the spelling and then sing it again softly. Now BOTH of you sing the word in the voice you choose!

Practice Test - Take a practice test.

Record a Word - Spell your words out loud and record yourself. Use a tape recorder, video camera or computer microphone to practice your spelling words.

Partner Word Step- On large piece of butcher paper print the letters of the alphabet. Have a grown up read the word aloud. You must step on the letters to spell the word.

Tissue Paper Tracing - Have a grown up write your weekly spelling words on a large piece of paper. Then place tissue paper over the words and trace over them with crayon.
